Day Trips

Explore the South Island

Staying with us a little longer and want to experience more of the surrounding regions while you’re here? Some of southern New Zealand’s most beautiful sights and attractions are located just a short drive from Stoneridge Estate and can easily be visited in a day. See some of our top recommendations below.

Milford Sound

Described by Rudyard Kipling as the eighth wonder of the world, Milford Sound is one of those breathtaking places that truly must be seen to be believed, with an exhilarating mix of wildlife, waterfalls and staggeringly-beautiful scenery. Sculpted by glaciers in the heart of Fiordland National Park, it is an idyllic spot for sightseeing, hiking or kayaking.

There is no better way to experience the majestic sights of Milford Sound and Fiordland than by helicopter. Lift off from Queenstown with Glacier Southern Lakes Helicopters and marvel at the soaring mountain peaks and spectacular lake views, then join a cruise once you arrive at Milford Sound itself to see the breathtaking cliffs from the water and cruise past the iconic Mitre Peak.

Glenorchy

The 45 kilometre road from Queenstown to Glenorchy is renowned for being one of the world’s most scenic drives. Winding between the clear blue lake waters and the hillside thick with native bush, the mountains form an unmistakeable silhouette against the sky.

On arrival in Glenorchy, take a stroll down to the jetty by the lake then enjoy a coffee or lunch in one of the handful of cafes dotted along the main street.

En route back to Queenstown, more stunning natural scenery can be found at Bob’s Cove or Moke Lake. The Little Paradise Lodge & Dream Garden is a quirky attraction worth visiting in the summer months, and the Glenorchy Animal Experience will appeal to children and big kids alike.

Cardrona

A short drive over the famously scenic Crown Range Road, Cardrona is well worth a visit – and not just for the views on the way there!

In summer, mountain karting and mountain biking are amongst the adrenalin-filled activities on offer at Cardrona Alpine Resort – or simply take a scenic gondola ride up to the top and enjoy the views.

In winter, the resort boasts top-notch alpine skiing and snowboarding, with Snow Farm down in the valley also offering cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and a family-friendly snow zone.

For food and drink, pop into the Cardrona Distillery for a tour and tasting of their delicious craft spirits (we recommend booking ahead!) then head to the Cardrona Hotel for a cosy lunch by the fire, or a cold beverage in their deceptively-spacious beer garden.

Wanaka

A little further on from Cardrona, Wanaka is a tiny, picturesque resort town nestled on the shores of Lake Wanaka, with phenomenal views over the Southern Alps.

Take a stroll around the lake and see if you can spot the famous Wanaka Tree, or get out on the water and enjoy a range of activities from kayaking and paddleboarding to sunset lake cruises. Keen hikers will also love Wanaka’s range of stunning trails,  from Instagram favourite Roy’s Peak to Mt Aspiring National Park.

In summer, the Wanaka Lavender Farm is well worth a visit, with 20 acres of fragrant lavender fields you can wander through, along with friendly resident farm animals and a quaint tearoom.
